Given the choice between a named source in a media blog, and an anonymous account in an anonymous tumblr blog... yeah, one's got a little more weight than the other. Other than that, the "history" part is just trying to enforce taste. Not supporting and telling other people not to support someone is great - actively trying to silence someone, not so much. You might think that's great, until a mob forms to silence someone you do like. (for instance: Laci Green.)I don’t entirely buy this account either.
I mean it was pretty much. “I don’t know what he said, but it wasn’t that!”
No it isn’t enforcing taste. Rape jokes are harmful and they contribute to the existence of rape culture, trivialize sexual assault, perpetuate rape myths.
People do actively try to silence people that I like all of the time. It is their right and I never say that it isn’t.
I will, however, point out why they are tying to silence them.
Anita Sarkeesian, for example, is being attacked with threats of violence and rape for simply pointing out the sexism in video games.
Or the calls for Bioware to fire Jennifer Helper also along with threats of violence and rape for saying she doesn’t like video games.
Or the right wing calls to shut up all of the “liberal” media.
Or saying that all the liberals should be killed or not permitted to vote or not permitted to speak.
Actively seeking to silence someone is more than people who sign a petition. It is typically done with intimidation tactics to scare that person in to never voicing their opinion again.
Even if Tosh gets taken off air; his freedom of speech still remains he will simply just have to find another place for it.
